When investigating templated dictation, consider its inherent limitations. The following is an example of a unique case which would not be able to be templated:
While talking to the patient, the patient states that they have been taking Aleve to relieve the pain. Aleve is an over the counter drug, so nothing wrong about that—yet.
On their past medical sheet the patient has indicated that they are also taking Coumadin because they have a history of an artificial heart valve. The problem with taking Coumadin and Aleve together is that it causes excessive thinning of the blood, which may potentially lead to blood loss.
Knowing this, the Doctor tells the patient the dangers of taking these two medicines together, and advises them to stop taking Aleve.
How would the physician document this case using a templated note generation system? The answer is he or she cannot because no template exists for this scenario. This is just one example. Read the following white paper for more information.
